BRIDGELUX DEMONSTRATES DRAMATIC ADVANCEMENTS IN GaN-ON-SILICON TECHNOLOGY FOR SOLID STATE LIGHTING

Demonstration Represents Industry’s First Commercial Grade Performance For Silicon-Based LED

Livermore, Calif., March 8, 2011- Bridgelux Inc., a leading developer and manufacturer of LED lighting technologies and solutions, announced today that it has achieved a major breakthrough with the demonstration of 135 Lumens per Watt GaN-on-Silicon based LED Technology. This represents the industry’s first commercial grade performance for a Silicon-based LED.

When grown at scale, most LED epitaxial wafers use sapphire or silicon carbide substrates as the starting material. But large diameter sapphire and silicon carbide substrates are costly, difficult to process, and not widely available. As a result, production costs have inhibited the widespread adoption of LED lighting in homes and commercial buildings. But growing GaN on larger, low-cost silicon wafers that are compatible with modern semiconductor manufacturing can deliver a 75% improvement in cost over current approaches.

The 135 Lumen per Watt performance was achieved at a CCT of 4730K using a single 1.5mm power LED operated at 350mA. These LEDs have extremely low operating voltages, requiring just 2.90V at 350mA and <3.25V at 1 Amp. The low forward voltage and excellent thermal resistance of the devices make them ideally suited for high-performance, illumination-grade applications. Optimization of the epitaxy process on 8-inch Si wafers will make LED manufacturing compatible with existing automated semiconductor lines.

The move to a Silicon substrate will be a revolutionary step for the LED industry, and Bridgelux is well- positioned to take full advantage of the introduction of this technology. Over the past 5 years, Dr. Steve Lester, one of the industry’s pioneers in LED Research and Development, has fostered a world-class team of Bridgelux materials scientists and chip design engineers dedicated to GaN-on-Silicon R&D. Concurrently, industry-wide research and development of GaN growth on Silicon has increased rapidly. And as a result, the GaN on Silicon performance levels reported by Bridgelux today are comparable to state-of-the-art sapphire-based LEDs available 12-24 months ago. The company anticipates the delivery of its first commercially available GaN-on-Silicon products over the course of the next two to three years.

Bridgelux, which maintains an asset-light operating model, will leverage its strong R&D and Intellectual Property position in LED epitaxy to jointly manufacture silicon based LEDs. The company is currently in discussions with a number of established semiconductor companies regarding the utilization of the many fully depreciated 8-inch semiconductor fabrication operations available around the globe.

“Bridgelux’s achievement is a significant reflection of the strength of our leadership in Silicon materials and epitaxial process technology, said Bill Watkins, Bridgelux CEO. “The significantly reduced cost-structures enabled by Silicon-based LED technology will continue to deliver dramatic reductions in the up-front capital investment required for solid state lighting. In as little as two to three years, even the most price-sensitive markets, such as commercial and office lighting, residential applications, and retrofit lamps will seamlessly and rapidly convert to solid state lighting.”

BRIDGELUX ANNOUNCES NEW BREAKTHROUGH IN GaN-ON-SILICON TECHNOLOGY FOR SOLID-STATE LIGHTING

Company Continues To Lead The Industry In Developing Commercial Grade Performance For Silicon-Based LEDs

Livermore, Calif., August 9, 2011 – Bridgelux Inc., a leading developer and manufacturer of LED lighting technologies and solutions, has shattered its previous industry record for highest Lumen per Watt values for Gallium Nitride on Silicon (GaN-on-Si). Using its proprietary buffer layer technology, the company has demonstrated growth of crack-free GaN layers on 8-inch silicon wafers, without bowing at room temperature, extending the company’s lead in driving the performance and manufacturability of GaN LEDs on silicon substrate.

Bridgelux is demonstrating LED performance levels comparable to today’s state-of-the-art sapphire-based LEDs. Cool white LEDs showed efficiencies as high as 160 Lm/W at a CCT of 4350K. Warm white LEDs constructed from the GaN on Si chips delivered 125 Lm/W at a color temperature of 2940K and CRI of 80.

Conventional LEDs are made using sapphire or silicon carbide substrates as the starting material. Both are more expensive than silicon. As a result, production costs have inhibited the widespread adoption of LED lighting in homes and commercial buildings. But growing GaN on larger, low-cost silicon wafers that are compatible with modern semiconductor manufacturing can deliver a 75% improvement in cost over current approaches. Bridgelux’s technology process has the potential to significantly drive down the cost of manufacturing LEDs and make them competitive to conventional white lighting technology.

“The performance levels that we announced today are the highest Lm/W values yet published for GaN-on-Si and rival the best commercial LEDs grown on sapphire or silicon carbide (SiC),” stated Dr. Steve Lester, Bridgelux chief technology officer. “These achievements are a direct result of our investment in building a world-class team of Bridgelux materials scientists and chip design engineers with a strong focus on driving industry-leading epitaxial process technology. We are very pleased with the pace of our progress in this area, and we will continue to aggressively develop our GaN-on-Si processes in order to drive the migration of LED commercial production from sapphire to silicon substrates. Our first commercially available GaN-on-Si products remain on schedule for delivery to the market within the next two years.”

The thermal expansion coefficient of GaN is considerably larger than that of silicon. This mismatch can cause the epitaxial films to crack, or the wafers to bow, either during epitaxial growth or at room temperature. Bridgelux’s proprietary buffer layer process produces crack-free wafers that are virtually flat at room temperature.

Encapsulated 1.5mm blue LEDs emit 591mW with wall plug efficiencies as high as 59% at 350mA, exceeding any published values. The LEDs have very low forward voltages, 2.85V at 350mA, making them ideal for use at high current densities. At a drive current of 1 amp the LEDs emitted 1.52 Watts of blue power at a forward voltage of 3.21V, resulting in a wall plug efficiency of 47%. Wavelength uniformity of sigma 6.8nm has been demonstrated for 8-inch LED wafers with median wavelength of 455nm.

“This new technological breakthrough is a direct result of Bridgelux’s continued investment in Research and Development combined with a singular focus on the needs of the solid state lighting market,” said Bill Watkins, Bridgelux CEO. “This key innovation is a game-changer for the industry, delivering dramatic reductions in the up-front capital investment required for solid state lighting and thereby significantly increasing the rate of market adoption. Bridgelux, which maintains an asset-light operating model, is uniquely well-positioned to benefit from the transition to silicon substrates. Leveraging our R&D and Intellectual Property position in LED epitaxy will allow the Company to pursue partnerships with existing semiconductor manufacturers. Leveraging existing semiconductor fabs via partnerships with established semiconductor manufacturers has the potential to favorably impact production costs, margins and returns on invested capital.”

Leveraging Bridgelux’s industry-leading ES and award-winning RS array technology to deliver the market’s brightest solid state light sources, Decor is optimized for demanding applications such as retail, hospitality, museums and high-end architectural lighting.

With a CRI of 97 and a 3-step MacAdams Elipse color control option, the Decor arrays enable lighting designers to truly render a full palette of colors over a wide range of light levels to create stunning and sophisticated lighting effects. Delivering 1200 to 2500 lumens, these new arrays have been spectrally engineered to closely replicate the light quality of halogen and incandescent light sources. These arrays deliver R9 and R15 values of 98, to both enhance reds and represent skin tones accurately, ensuring clean and natural lighting. The Decor series expands lighting options available to the lighting designer, complimenting the standard minimum 80 and minimum 90 CRI products already available from Bridgelux.

“The new Decor arrays take us to the next level, enabling very high-end lighting design,” said Giorgio Martini, vice president at Martini. “Developed in collaboration with Martini Lighting R&D, these new arrays have allowed us to rethink lighting and luminaire design in fresh and innovative ways. We can design precision lighting effects and striking contrast ratios enhancing the presentation of retail merchandise. The Decor arrays now permit us to deliver the highest quality light, brilliantly rendering colors and textures. These are the elements that allow us to present our shops and restaurants in living color.”

The Decor arrays deliver light output equivalent to a 75 – 150 watt halogen bulb, while using only 25 – 50 watts of power. Further, the Decor arrays feature the same form factor as previous Bridgelux Array product generations, allowing for a simple upgrade path for existing customers while minimizing design efforts.
